The Senate on Thursday asked Federal ministry of Humanitarian and Federal Emaergency management Agency (FEMA) to provide palliative to the people of Laya Town, in Gwaram local government in Jigawa state.

Notes that the people of Laya community of Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State
experienced a devastating windstorm on Thursday May 16, 2024.
He Further Notes that the windstorm accompanied by a heavy rainfall has caused widespread destruction of lives, injuries, houses, farmlands, and schools in the community.
According to him, the windstorm has further resulted in the displacement of people and families from their ancestral homes, animals, farmlands, as well as destroying essential infrastructure for their economic prosperity.
He raised Concerned that the people of Laya town are less privileged persons displaced by the windstorm and living in destitution, suffering and fear of future disasters.
The Senate is Worried that government agencies have failed to give disaster warnings and preparedness technics to prevent and control disasters to local communities thereby causing constant fear and lack of knowledge on preparedness by communities across the country.
The Senate Resolves that Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to send relief materials especially building materials to
enable the people of Laya Town to rebuild their homes and alleviate their pain in view of the impending raining season.
Mandate the Senate Committees on Environment and Compliance to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks.
