In a landmark decision, the Nigerian Senate has approved the establishment of the South West Development Commission with the passing of the South-West Development Commission Bill, 2024. This move is set to accelerate the region’s infrastructural development and spur economic growth.
The bill underwent thorough review and discussion before being passed for its third reading, signifying a significant step towards its implementation. All Senators present during Thursday’s plenary session deliberated on the bill’s recommendation and gave their approval, showing bipartisan support for the initiative.
During the session, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, who led the proceedings, commended the efforts of Senator Kaka and the committee for their diligent work on the bill. This approval comes after the successful establishment of similar development commissions for other regions such as the North West, North Central, and South East.
Furthermore, the Senate also endorsed the appointment of Mrs. Olukemi Victoria Iyantan as a Commissioner representing Ondo State in the National Population Commission. This decision was made following a thorough review by the Senate committee on National Identity Card and National Population, with unanimous support from Senators present.
The approval of Mrs. Iyantan’s appointment signals a new chapter for the National Population Commission, as she joins other commissioners and the Chairman to drive the commission’s objectives forward. This development marks a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to promote regional development and ensure effective representation across various sectors.
