In a recent expert forum held in Berlin, Germany, the Secretary-General of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL), Amb. ‘Dapo Oyewole, stressed the importance of African leaders coming together to strengthen democratic governance in order to make it more people-centered.
Speaking on the topic of ‘Strengthening Democracy & Good Governance in Africa in a Changing World Order’, Oyewole highlighted the need for proactive leadership in building a strong economy that promotes inclusive growth and development.
He praised the political systems of Namibia and Senegal for their innovative approach in leadership, with women and a young male leader taking the helm in these countries. Oyewole stated that beyond holding elections, the key factors for improved democratic rule in Africa should include job creation, security, justice, dignity, and human rights.
Oyewole emphasized that the true test of democracy lies in building authentic and responsive democracies that deliver tangible results for the people. He urged African leaders to be competent, efficient, and strategic in driving necessary changes for the continent’s future.
As his tenure as a Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow at the Robert Bosch Academy in Berlin comes to an end, Oyewole reiterated his commitment to working with leaders, allies, and partners to strengthen legislative institutions across Africa. He emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values, the rule of law, and fundamental rights to ensure effective and responsive legislatures that can deliver development and human security for the people of Africa.
In conclusion, Oyewole stated that the future of Africa ultimately depends on its leaders and their ability to address the challenges of today while shaping a vision for tomorrow. He called for leadership based on competence, capacity, and a commitment to serving the people rather than personal gain.
