Women’s grassroots football received a major lift on Saturday as Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu, backed the 2025 HerGame Girls Tournament with a ₦1 million donation, reaffirming the National Assembly’s commitment to nurturing young female athletes.

The HerGame Girls Tournament—an initiative of the HerGame Foundation—has become a fast-rising platform for discovering and grooming future women football stars. What began as a small Abuja-based event has now expanded into a North Central regional competition, featuring 16 teams in this year’s edition.

Hon. Amadu, represented by his media aide Niyi Busari, praised the growth of the tournament and assured organizers of strengthened institutional backing.

“This ₦1 million donation is to support and encourage the founder and sole sponsor of this tournament,” he said. “We are working on securing further financial support from the National Assembly, which will be released within a week. We also promise continuous support for future grassroots women’s competitions. However, we encourage the organizers to scale up and make this a national event.”

Founder of the HerGame Foundation, Dr. Pat Ajuma Ayegba, expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying she was overwhelmed by the financial and moral support received from the National Assembly.

“My profound gratitude goes to Hon. Kabiru Amadu for attending the final match, supporting the tournament with ₦1 million, and promising to help us host an even more elaborate national women’s grassroots football event next year,” she stated.

On the pitch, Horvel Angels emerged champions, defeating defending champions Fosla Academy 2–0 in a commanding final at the Area 3 Sports Complex, Abuja.

The support from the legislature and the tournament’s expanding reach signal a promising future for grassroots women’s football in Nigeria.
