The Armed Forces of Nigeria have called for stronger collaboration with the media and renewed national unity as the country continues to confront security and socio-economic challenges.
This was conveyed in a goodwill message delivered on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, at an Easter programme organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
Representing the CDS, the Armed Forces commended the NUJ for organising the event, which brought together faith, patriotism, and professional responsibility under the theme: “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life.”
The message highlighted the significance of Easter as the cornerstone of the Christian faith, symbolising the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the triumph of life over death, truth over falsehood, and hope over despair.
Drawing parallels with Nigeria’s current realities, the Armed Forces noted that despite ongoing security challenges and economic pressures, the nation remains resilient, stressing that difficult times are temporary and renewal is achievable through faith, unity, and collective effort.
The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that troops across various theatres of operation continue to combat terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other threats with courage and professionalism.
It added that the sacrifices of military personnel have enabled the restoration of normalcy in several communities, allowing displaced persons to return home, farmers to resume activities, and businesses to thrive.
The Armed Forces also underscored the critical role of the media in national security, describing journalists as indispensable partners in shaping public perception and promoting unity. It urged practitioners to uphold accuracy, professionalism, and ethical standards in reporting, especially in matters relating to security.
According to the statement, responsible journalism helps counter misinformation, builds public trust, and supports peacebuilding efforts nationwide.
The Armed Forces further called on Nigerians to embrace reconciliation, compassion, and shared responsibility in addressing security challenges, noting that lasting peace requires cooperation among citizens, community leaders, religious institutions, and the media.
The message also paid tribute to fallen heroes who lost their lives in the line of duty, assuring their families that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.
While wishing Nigerians a peaceful Easter celebration, the Armed Forces urged continued prayers for troops in operational areas and reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing operational effectiveness, strengthening inter-agency collaboration, and leveraging modern strategies to tackle emerging threats.
The statement concluded with a call for renewed faith, hope, and commitment to building a secure, united, and prosperous Nigeria.
