In recent years, the world has witnessed a significant shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly mobility solutions, with electric vehicles (EVs) emerging as a frontrunner in this transition. Nigeria, as a fast-growing economy, stands to benefit immensely from this global trend, while innovative efforts, particularly from young female entrepreneurs, have the potential to reshape the landscape of sustainable transportation in the country.
The transition to electric vehicles in Nigeria holds considerable economic promise. As a nation heavily reliant on imported fossil fuels for transportation, embracing electric vehicles could significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence on foreign oil and mitigate the negative impacts of volatile oil prices on the economy. Moreover, transitioning to EVs can decrease air pollution and improve public health, ultimately reducing healthcare costs and boosting productivity.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining momentum in the global automotive industry and Nigeria is not left out in this revolution. The economic benefits of electric vehicles to Nigeria are immense, and if women can be empowered to own and operate an electric vehicle firm, it could potentially introduce a new dimension of change in a male-dominated society.
The economic benefits of electric vehicles in Nigeria are significant, and their proliferation holds the potential to revolutionize the country’s transportation sector. When coupled with the emergence of female-led electric vehicle firms, this innovation can offer a new dimension to female empowerment and gender inclusivity in the sustainable mobility landscape. When young women are empowered to enter the EV industry, Nigeria can anticipate a positive transformation in both its economy and society, thereby creating a more sustainable and equitable future for all and further help bridge the gender gap in Nigeria’s male-dominated business landscape, fostering a more equitable and diverse economy.
Moreover, the establishment of an electric vehicle firm, led and managed by women, could serve as a catalyst for social and economic empowerment. It would not only provide jobs and business opportunities for women but also challenge traditional gender roles in a society where male dominance is prevalent. By breaking the gender barriers and promoting female entrepreneurship in the automotive industry, Nigeria can harness the untapped potential of women and drive inclusive economic growth.
Speaking at an e-mobility awareness training organized by the The Skilled Women Initiatives (TSWINI) E-Mobility which was powered by E-mobility Energy and Gender Strategy Advancement Initiative (GSAI) with the aim of providing its participants with the information and abilities needed to successfully traverse the quickly changing field of electric mobility, The founder of The skilled Women Initiatives Chisom Nwankwo highlighted the need for collaborations to hasten the vision of electric vehicles by showcasing a documentary on Evolution of electric Vehicles done by China. She noted that, First and foremost, the transition to electric vehicles in Nigeria would significantly reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels, particularly oil. As one of the largest oil-producing countries in Africa, Nigeria currently relies heavily on the exportation of crude oil for revenue generation. By embracing electric vehicles, the country can diversify its economy and reduce the impact of global oil price fluctuations. This shift to electric vehicles also aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation, as EVs produce no direct emissions, leading to improved air quality and public health.
Additionally, the integration of electric vehicles into Nigeria’s transportation system would result in cost savings for both consumers and the government. Electric vehicles are significantly cheaper to operate and maintain compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. The reduction in fuel and maintenance costs can translate to higher disposable income for consumers, while the government stands to benefit from reduced subsidies on fuel and lower healthcare costs associated with air pollution-related illnesses.
Furthermore, the innovation of electric vehicles can bridge the gap towards eco-friendly mobility solutions in a country where transportation infrastructure is in dire need of improvement. The development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and the implementation of favorable policies and incentives can accelerate the transition to clean and sustainable mobility. This will not only contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions but also enhance the overall quality of life for Nigeria.
Conclusively, she added that, the economic benefits of electric vehicles to Nigeria are substantial, and the empowerment of women to own and operate an electric vehicle firm could bring about significant social and economic transformation. This innovative approach can contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive automotive industry, and ultimately lead to a shift towards eco-friendly mobility solutions, making Nigeria a frontrunner in the global transition to electric vehicles. It is imperative for the government, private sector, and civil society to work together to realize the full potential of electric vehicles and empower women to take a leading role in this transformative change.
