The National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL) has applauded President Bola Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) into law, describing the development as a decisive step toward deepening Nigeria’s democratic system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, the Forum’s National Coordinator, Hon. Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe, praised the National Assembly (NASS) of Nigeria for what he described as a proactive and people-focused legislative process that ensured the timely passage of the amended law.
“The National Forum of Former Legislators warmly commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for demonstrating leadership and commitment to democratic reforms by assenting to the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment),” Hon. Igbokwe said. “This bold action reflects the President’s determination to continually strengthen Nigeria’s electoral framework.”
He further lauded lawmakers for responding to public concerns raised during deliberations on the amendment.
“We equally commend the National Assembly for listening to the voice of the masses and civil society groups,” Hon. Igbokwe added. “The adjustments made strike a practical balance between technological advancement and the realities of infrastructure challenges in parts of the country.”
According to the NFFL National Coordinator, the amendment coming shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission released the timetable for the 2027 elections provides clarity and stability for political stakeholders and voters alike.
“The signing of this law well ahead of the 2027 polls gives INEC, political parties, and all stakeholders ample time to prepare within a clear and credible legal framework,” Hon. Igbokwe noted.
He urged INEC to implement the amended provisions transparently and consistently, stressing that public trust in future elections would depend largely on faithful enforcement of the law. He also called on political parties and security agencies to fully support efforts toward peaceful and credible elections.
“The success of the 2027 general elections will not rest on legislation alone, but on the collective commitment of all stakeholders to uphold democratic values,” Hon. Igbokwe concluded.
