Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has called for the development of effective laws to regulate and uphold safety standards across various sectors of the Nigerian economy. At a public hearing on a bill to establish the National Safety Regulatory Board, Tajudeen emphasized the importance of safety standards and regulations in safeguarding lives and livelihoods, and promoting socio-economic development.
He encouraged stakeholders to make relevant contributions to improve the quality of the bill, stressing that public hearings provide an opportunity to shape and reshape the law-making process. Tajudeen reiterated the 10th House’s commitment to security and safety, underscoring the significance of this gathering.
Chairman of the House Committee on Safety Standard and Regulation, Hon. Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, highlighted the need for a National Safety Regulatory Board to address emerging safety challenges and create public awareness. The board will prioritize risk assessment, research, capacity building, and public education to promote a safety-conscious culture.
Gumi noted that the bill has been shared extensively with stakeholders for input, and that contributions are integral to shaping the initiative. The technical committee will review all feedback thoroughly. He emphasized that the goal of the board is to streamline operations, eliminate redundancies, and resolve conflicts across sectoral safety regulatory bodies, ultimately enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in safety regulation nationwide.
