In a bid to tackle the alarming rise of drug and substance abuse among young people, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has rolled out a statewide campaign in selected secondary schools across Calabar, Cross River State.
Held on February 19, 2025, at the West African People Institute (WAPI), the initiative, in collaboration with Devongnosis Education Limited and key stakeholders, seeks to raise awareness among students about the dangers of drug abuse, empower them to make informed choices, and create student ambassadors to spread the message.
Dr. Eme Inyangabia, Assistant Director at NDDC, opened the event with a stern warning on the increasing prevalence of drug use among secondary school students. She pledged NDDC’s unwavering commitment to combating this growing issue.
Nnadi Roseline Ada, Deputy Commander of the NDLEA’s Cross River State Drug Demand Reduction Unit, also highlighted the connection between substance abuse and deteriorating mental health and academic performance, urging swift action to protect the future of the youth.
A powerful testimony from a former drug addict who shared his nine-year struggle and recovery journey underscored the seriousness of the problem, leaving a lasting impact on the students.
Stakeholders at the event called for a broader expansion of the campaign to more schools across the region, advocating for continued engagement through mentorship, follow-up programs, and greater parental involvement. They also emphasized the importance of strengthening rehabilitation services to support affected students in their recovery.
