The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has made a resounding call for the protection of press freedom and improved welfare for journalists in Nigeria, particularly in the nation’s capital.
Speaking during a symbolic “Walk for Press Freedom” held on Monday in Abuja, NUJ FCT Chairperson, Ms. Grace Ike, emphasized that democracy cannot thrive without a free and independent press. The walk was a major highlight of the ongoing NUJ FCT 2025 Press Week, themed: “Seeking Deliverance from the Ancient Troubles of Life.”
“This walk is more than a gesture — it is a powerful statement that journalism remains the uncompromising defender of democracy and truth,” Ike declared. “Without press freedom, society is shackled. The truth becomes a distant dream.”
She called on the government, civil society groups, and all stakeholders to actively protect journalists against censorship, intimidation, and attacks, stressing that the media is not the enemy of the state but its conscience.
Ike also demanded better working conditions for journalists, lamenting that many are treated unfairly despite being on the frontlines of truth and accountability. “Journalists are not beggars,” she asserted. “They deserve to be treated with dignity and professional respect.”
In her remarks, Mrs. Evelyn Onyilo, Chairperson of the Press Week Organising Committee, urged public office holders to end their habitual suspicion of journalists. “Journalists should not be seen as enemies, especially by those who used the media to gain power,” she said.
Onyilo condemned the poor treatment and working conditions endured by many in the profession, stating that government must demonstrate its commitment to press freedom as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
Echoing similar sentiments, NUJ FCT Vice Chairman, Mr. Ndambabo Yahaya, said the walk was to reaffirm that press freedom is a right, not a privilege. “It is the mother of all other freedoms,” he emphasized.
The solidarity walk began at the popular Berger Roundabout and concluded at the NUJ Council Secretariat in Utako, attracting dozens of journalists and media advocates across the FCT.
As Press Week activities continue, the NUJ is reiterating its commitment to defending democracy, advocating for the rights of journalists, and promoting ethical journalism across Nigeria.
