The House of Representatives has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, lauding his legacy as a disciplined leader and reform-driven statesman who left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s democratic journey.
In a solemn statement released today, the Green Chamber paid tribute to Buhari’s decades-long service to the nation—first as a Military Head of State (1983–1985) and later as a democratically elected President who led the country for two terms (2015–2023). Lawmakers described his death as “the end of an era defined by national discipline, democratic consolidation, and transformative governance.”
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, in a condolence message, said:
“The news of the demise of former President Muhammadu Buhari was shocking to me. But we cannot question our Creator. All mortals shall taste death. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.”
He further described the late President as “an officer and statesman who made a name for himself as incorruptible,” praising his simplicity and integrity, which resonated deeply with Nigerians.
During his tenure, the National Assembly enjoyed a constructive working relationship with Buhari’s administration. This collaboration saw the restoration of the January–December budget cycle, and the enactment of landmark legislation such as the Petroleum Industry Act, the reformed Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA 2020), multiple Finance Acts, and the groundbreaking Electoral Act of 2022.
The House also highlighted his role in assenting to critical constitutional amendments—enhancing state autonomy over electricity, railways, and correctional services; enforcing timelines for cabinet formation; and granting financial independence to state legislatures and judiciaries.
Buhari was commended for institutionalising Nigeria’s social welfare efforts through the National Social Investment Programme Agency Act and for championing political inclusion with the Not Too Young to Run Act. His designation of June 12 as Democracy Day in honour of MKO Abiola was also praised as a landmark in national reconciliation.
In infrastructure, his administration delivered the long-awaited Second Niger Bridge, expanded rail networks, and made strategic investments in roads and power.
The House concluded by offering condolences to H.E. Hajiya Aisha Buhari, the Buhari family, the Government and People of Katsina State, and all Nigerians.
“May his legacy of public service, national integrity, and institutional reform endure in the annals of our nation’s history,” the statement read.
