The Senate Committee on Sports has screened Alhaji Mainasara Illo following his nomination as Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Anti-Doping Centre (NADC) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The screening, held on Wednesday, forms part of the legislative process required for confirmation after the President formally transmitted the nomination to the Senate.
The request was earlier read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and referred to the Committees on Sports and Narcotics for scrutiny.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Abdul Ningi, described the nomination as a “right choice,” noting that Illo’s credentials and experience position him well to lead the anti-doping agency.
He emphasized that the establishment of the Centre demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to treating sports as a serious sector and urged the nominee to leverage the opportunity to create employment for youths.
Responding, Alhaji Mainasara Illo expressed appreciation to the President for the confidence reposed in him.
He highlighted the global significance of anti-doping efforts, noting that while several testing centres exist worldwide, Nigeria’s initiative represents a major step forward for Africa.
He assured lawmakers of the Centre’s readiness to collaborate with relevant government agencies to ensure a drug-free sporting environment.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Narcotics, Ibrahim Dankwambo, commended the President for nominating a qualified candidate and urged the nominee to contribute to advancing sports administration in Nigeria.
Other lawmakers, including Senator Osita, expressed support for the nomination, citing Illo’s track record and experience.
The joint committees are expected to submit their report to the Senate for consideration and confirmation in due course.
The nomination is in line with provisions of the Nigerian Anti-Doping Act 2025, which mandates Senate confirmation for the appointment of the NADC Executive Secretary for a four-year t
