Senator Joseph Ikpea, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, has defended the National Assembly’s position on recent amendments to the Electoral Act, reiterated his support for the establishment of state police, and called for sustained international collaboration to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Senator Ikpea emphasized that Nigeria’s security situation requires a combination of internal institutional reforms and responsible global partnerships.
He commended the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu for strengthening bilateral cooperation with the United States in the fight against insecurity, noting that even major world powers rely on strategic alliances during periods of crisis.
Referencing the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Senator stated that global events demonstrate the importance of international support systems. He stressed that Nigeria should not hesitate to seek necessary assistance in combating unconventional and asymmetric threats.
Senator Ikpea further clarified that extremist elements who operate under religious identities do not represent the peaceful majority of Nigerian Muslims, emphasizing that religion must never be exploited to justify violence or criminality.
Electoral Act Amendment
Addressing public debate over the Electoral Act amendment, Senator Ikpea defended the decision to retain both electronic transmission and manual backup of election results.
He explained that while electronic transmission enhances transparency and efficiency, no system is completely immune to technical failures or cyber threats.
According to him, the dual approach ensures inclusivity in areas with limited network connectivity and provides an essential safeguard against potential system disruptions.
“No credible system operates without a backup,” he stated, describing the Senate’s decision as pragmatic, protective, and in the overall best interest of Nigeria’s democracy.
Edo Central Erosion Crisis
On environmental issues affecting his constituency, Senator Ikpea spoke on renewed efforts to address erosion and ecological challenges in Edo Central.
He acknowledged that similar motions had been raised previously but assured constituents that strengthened follow-up with relevant federal agencies is underway to ensure tangible and lasting solutions.
He expressed confidence that coordinated action between lawmakers and federal institutions will deliver measurable progress.
Politics and Governance
With elections approaching, the lawmaker dismissed concerns that political activities could distract from legislative responsibilities.
He affirmed that governance remains the primary duty of lawmakers and noted that the National Assembly retains the authority to reconvene at any time to address urgent national matters.
Support for State Police
On constitutional reform, Senator Ikpea reiterated his strong support for the creation of state police, arguing that decentralized security structures would enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen community-based security, and enable faster responses to emerging threats.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of ongoing reforms, stressing that rebuilding institutions, stabilizing the economy, and strengthening national security require unity, sustained commitment, and time.
