The House of Representatives has expressed concern over the recent cholera outbreak in Lagos State, which has resulted in approximately 60 hospitalizations and five deaths in just a few days. This localized outbreak is symptomatic of a broader national crisis, with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reporting 65 confirmed cases and 30 fatalities across 96 local governments in 30 states between January 1 and June 11, 2024.

The lawmakers are urging swift action to contain the spread of the disease and address the underlying factors contributing to its persistence.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) issued a public health advisory, alerting the public to a concerning surge in cholera cases nationwide, exacerbated by the escalating rainy season.
As of this year, a total of 1,141 suspected cases have been reported, with ten states accounting for a disproportionate 90% of these cases.

Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services, has urged for swift and collaborative action to address the outbreak, emphasizing the need for a coordinated strategy to contain the spread of the disease and mitigate its impact on public health.
“We must act quickly and decisively to address this cholera outbreak. Mobilizing resources and implementing preventive measures are crucial to safeguard our citizens.”

He continued, “Community engagement and education are essential in fighting the spread of cholera. We urge citizens to follow hygiene practices and report any suspected cases to health authorities. Ensuring access to clean drinking water, proper sanitation and waste disposal, and maintaining good hygiene practices, including regular hand washing, are key to preventing cholera.”

The House lauded the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) for its leadership in coordinating a multi-sectoral National Cholera Technical Working Group and providing crucial support to affected states.
The House further commends the Lagos State Government and other state governments for their transparency in reporting the outbreak and their proactive efforts to contain the spread of cholera, mitigating its impact on public health.

They reaffirms their commitment to strengthening the nation’s healthcare system, ensuring access to quality medical services for all Nigerians, and providing the necessary support to combat the cholera outbreak and other public health challenges.

“Healthcare remains a top priority on the legislative agenda of the 10th Assembly House of Representatives. We are committed to enhancing the healthcare system and ensuring access to quality medical services for all Nigerians. The House will continue to advocate for strong public health measures and preventive strategies to manage outbreaks like this”

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this outbreak and urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant.”
