A House of Representatives investigative committee has promised swift action following allegations of fraud and poor management within the 2023 and 2024 Hajj Commission.
The probe, led by Hon. Soli Sanda, the committee’s chairman, has exposed serious concerns raised by travel agents about unfulfilled services and mismanagement of funds.
Travel operators, including Sara Sani Umar, Managing Director of Dubu Travels, have come forward, demanding justice and the immediate refund of funds paid for services that were not delivered as promised.
In a media briefing on Thursday, 14th November 2024, Sani shared her devastating experience, highlighting the systemic failure in the handling of the 2023 and 2024 pilgrimages.
The committee’s investigation has intensified over the past four days, and there is mounting pressure on the commission’s leadership to address the issue.
The committee has signaled that, should evidence of fraud and mismanagement be confirmed, it may seek the involvement of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Meanwhile, the committee has reassured the media and stakeholders that it is committed to transparency, with a final report expected on Thursday, 21st November 2024.
In a hopeful turn, the Chairman of the Commission has assured that the pending payments and refunds to affected operators will be processed soon.
While the investigation continues, the public remains eager to see justice done, with hopes for systemic changes that could prevent future mishandling of Hajj operations.
As the inquiry unfolds, many are holding out hope that those responsible for the alleged fraud will be held accountable, ensuring a better future for pilgrims and travel operators alike.
