As the interactive sessions with the MDA’s, in Nigeria ahead of 2025 Appropriation and budget defense, the Senate Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa/NEPAD continued ,the committee has called for more collaboration between the senate and Nigerian police to address the critical challenges facing force more intervention from senate if necessary.
The chairman senate Committee on Cooperation and integration in Africa/NEPAD and Senator representing Katsina North Senatorial district sen Nasiru Sani Zangon-Daura stated this on Wednesday in Abuja,
He commended the Nigerian Police for sending the Commissioner of Police, Head of Interpol NCB, Abuja, CP Olaolu Adegbite and his subordinate DCP Augustine Moses Jagaba, DCP Peacekeeping, FHQ, Abuja.
The Commissioner of Police, on behalf of police highlights areas of intervention, noted the need to invest more in technology, information surveillance and border security for protection within Africa and west Africa.
CP Olaolu Adegbite emphasized on the forces of social media, how young Nigerians are engaging to build on the platform, noting the cyber crime rate within the space.
According to him,border security threats towards Nigeria, Chad of drugs and taxes invasion among others.
He Outlined the peacekeeping intervention which started in 1960, the DCP Peacekeeping noted the deployment of a contingent of individual police officers to the then United Nations operations in Congo, which is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He explained how the deployments of Nigerian police officers, together with other contingent of police officers from Ghana, marked the beginning of police participation in UN global peace support operations.
“So Nigeria has, to its credit, been the very first country to deploy police officers to any UN peacekeeping operations. In 2004, once again, the Nigerian police force became the very first in Africa to deploy a phone police unit, which is our own version of the mobile police unit, to the UN mission in Liberia. So later, in the other years, we have had similar deployments of phone police units
Responding the Chairman Senate Committee on NEPAD. sen Nasiru Sani Zangon-Daur praised the commissioner and his subordinate for proper briefs, and called for more collaboration in working with Nigerian Police to protect the country and work together for greater attainments. “We make appropriations to those that can strengthen to enable you to have better outcomes.”
Also Senator Ned Nwoko commended the team noting their experience in what they are doing. “You know exactly what needs to be done. You might not have the necessary support now, the financial support, to achieve all that you set out to achieve.
“But I can well assure you that this committee led by the chairman here, will do anything and everything possible to support and equip you in upgrading you and your facilities so as to tackle terrorism and other problems within Africa.”
