The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has declared the 10th House of Representatives as one of the most proactive and productive in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Speaking at the inaugural Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda of the House in Abuja, Speaker Abbas highlighted the remarkable achievements of the House since its inauguration in June 2023.
The event, which brought together stakeholders from the government, private sector, and the diplomatic corps, was jointly organised by the Office of the Speaker, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), National Assembly Library Trust Fund (NALTF), and UK International Development.
“In terms of legislative output, this House has been extraordinarily proactive and productive,” Abbas said, noting that the 10th House has introduced a record number of bills and motions aimed at critical national reforms—many of which have already received a presidential assent.
Emphasising transparency and citizen engagement, the Speaker stated that the Policy Dialogue reflects the House’s commitment to openness and public accountability. “This is part of our promise to regularly engage Nigerians, report our performance, and adjust our course based on their feedback,” he added, ahead of the upcoming Open NASS Week.
Abbas recalled the dire national circumstances at the House’s inception from economic instability to fuel subsidy removal and how the House responded with an ambitious legislative agenda aligned with President Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’. The agenda, he said, was crafted through extensive consultation and encompasses eight priority areas, including governance, security, economy, social development, and environmental sustainability.
He affirmed that the success of the House has been due to deliberate planning, strategic execution, and resilient focus. “We backed our plan with concrete implementation strategies, performance tracking, and active communication with the public,” he noted.
Reiterating the House’s commitment to inclusive and responsive governance, Abbas said: “We have made the 10th House a citizen-driven legislature in practice, not just in words.”
