…Dodomayana’s Legacy Will Continue to Inspire Generations: Hon Amadu

By Comfort Olayinka

The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has paid glowing tribute to late Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai, who passed away at the age of 61, describing him as a national treasure whose impact on and off the pitch will not be forgotten.

In a solemn statement issued on Friday, Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kabiru Amadu, expressed heartfelt condolences to the Rufai family, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), National Sports Commission, Lagos State Government, and football fans across the world.

“Peter Rufai was not only a patriot, but a symbol of excellence in Nigerian football,” Amadu stated. “His dedication, leadership, and incredible talent brought immense pride to the nation.”

Rufai, fondly called “Dodomayana”, was a key figure in Nigeria’s golden era of football, notably starring in the 1994 AFCON triumph in Tunisia and leading the Super Eagles in their debut at the FIFA World Cup USA ‘94. His legendary saves and charismatic leadership made him a household name and a role model to aspiring footballers nationwide.

Beginning his career with Stationery Stores FC in Lagos, Rufai was one of the first Nigerian goalkeepers to ply his trade abroad, playing in Europe for clubs in Belgium, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Spain. His international exploits opened doors for future generations of Nigerian players in top European leagues.

Following his retirement, Rufai dedicated his life to nurturing talent through the Staruf Football Academy in Lagos, a grassroots initiative that produced and mentored countless young athletes.

Hon. Amadu praised Rufai’s post-retirement legacy, stating that “he not only made history, but he gave back selflessly to ensure others could dream.”

The House Committee on Sports pledged continued support to Rufai’s family and urged football authorities to immortalize the icon.

“He may have hung his gloves, but his legacy still stands tall in the goalpost of Nigerian football history,” the Committee concluded.
