The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has thrown its full weight behind the Super Falcons as they chase a historic 10th African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, following their commanding 3-0 victory over Tunisia in the tournament’s Group B opener.
Dubbed Mission X, the quest for a record-extending title received a boost on Sunday night as goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chiwendu Ihezuo powered Nigeria to the top of Group B—pending the result of the Algeria vs Botswana tie.
Reacting to the victory, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon Kabiru Amadu, hailed the team’s performance, describing it as a “bold statement of intent” and a promising start to their continental campaign.
“On behalf of the Committee, I congratulate the Super Falcons for their dominant performance against Tunisia. This victory should ignite the fire within the team to push forward and achieve the dream of winning the African Women’s Nations Cup for the tenth time,” Amadu said in a press statement released on Monday.
He reaffirmed the Committee’s unwavering support, assuring that all relevant institutions, including the National Assembly and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), are committed to ensuring the team receives the support needed to succeed.
“You remain the best team on the continent, and we believe in your capacity to make Nigeria proud,” he added.
Amadu, alongside Honourable Jonathan Gaza, was present at the stadium in Morocco to cheer on the Falcons, further demonstrating the legislature’s active involvement in boosting national sports.
The Super Falcons will look to maintain their momentum when they face Botswana on Thursday at 8:00 p.m., before wrapping up the group stage against Algeria on Sunday at the same time.
