The Chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps and Vice Chairman Correspondents Chapel NUJ FCT, Comrade Grace Ike, has advocated for improved working conditions for journalists. Ike spoke as she joined the Muslim community to celebrate the end of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr celebration.

She called upon media organizations, government agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to take concrete measures towards enhancing the welfare of journalists, whom she described as the bedrock of democracy.

“As Eid al-Fitr approaches, I extend heartfelt congratulations and warm wishes to Nigerian Muslim journalists and all citizens celebrating this joyous occasion,” she said.

Comrade Ike emphasized that the recently concluded month of Ramadan symbolizes “a time of reflection, compassion, and generosity, where individuals and communities come together to support one another and extend kindness to

Comrade Ike emphasized that the recently concluded month of Ramadan symbolizes “a time of reflection, compassion, and generosity, where individuals and communities come together to support one another and extend kindness to those in need.

“In the spirit of this sacred month and celebration of Eid, it is crucial to address the challenges faced by journalists and ensure they receive the support and recognition they deserve,” she added.

“Journalists play a critical role in our society, serving as the watchdogs of democracy and guardians of truth. Despite their indispensable contributions, many journalists continue to face inadequate pay, long hours, job insecurity, and even safety risks in the course of their work.

“By investing in the well-being of journalists, we not only uphold the principles of justice and equity but also safeguard the integrity and independence of the media, which is essential for the functioning of a healthy democracy.”
Acknowledging the current economic challenges faced by journalists and Nigerians in general, Comrade Ike encouraged everyone to embrace the values of empathy, solidarity, and charity.

“As we come together in celebration, let us remember those less fortunate and extend our support to those in need. May this Eid al-Fitr be a time of joy, renewal, and blessings for all.

We wish you and your families a blessed Eid filled with happiness, love, and prosperity. Eid Mubarak!”
