The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has called for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from the envelope budgetary regime, advocating for more accurate and flexible funding to enhance police operations.
In his presentation of the 2025 budget before the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions, Egbetokun emphasized the importance of allocating dedicated funds for national security emergencies and increasing support for the Force’s overhead and capital expenditures.
The IGP also proposed the construction of five new zonal headquarters and the establishment of specialized tactical units to strengthen internal security. He further stressed the need for a Special Operations Account and a dedicated budget for police training institutions to bolster the Force’s capacity.
In addition, the IGP highlighted the significance of timely and full release of appropriated funds in 2025 for the effective functioning of the NPF, underscoring the commitment of the Force to working closely with lawmakers to achieve a more secure and stable nation.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relation Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: “Additionally, the IGP stressed that the prompt and full release of appropriated funds in 2025 would be essential for the smooth functioning of the entire Force.
“The Inspector-General of Police expressed his gratitude to the Joint Committees for their engagement during this critical budgetary session. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to working collaboratively with the committees to reposition the NPF, aligning it with the shared vision of a secure and stable nation”.
Amongst those in attendance at the budget presentation are Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Maidori (Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs), Honourable Makki Yalleman (Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs), Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam (Minister of Police Affairs) DIG Hashimu Argungu Rtd. (Chairman Police Service Commission) and other distinguished members of the committees.
