In a heartfelt letter, the former National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr Chris Isiguzo has congratulated the Union as it celebrated its 70th anniversary on March 15, 2025.

Isiguzo extended his warm felicitations to Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdulahi, the current National President, the National Executive Council, and all members of the Union on this remarkable milestone.

He praised the NUJ for its resilience and unwavering commitment to defending press freedom, promoting professionalism, and advocating for the welfare of journalists in Nigeria. Reflecting on the Union’s founding in 1955, he acknowledged the significant role it has played in shaping Nigeria’s media landscape, particularly in defending journalists’ rights amidst political and economic challenges.

As a past president who led the Union for six years, Isiguzo expressed immense pride in the progress made during his tenure and the Union’s consistent focus on improving journalists’ working conditions and ethical standards. He noted the strength of the Union in overcoming difficult times and lauded the continued advocacy for the welfare of journalists across Nigeria.

Isiguzo who presently leads the Congress of African Journalists highlighted the achievements of the NUJ, which has not only played a central role in Nigeria’s national discourse but has also built a strong reputation on the international stage. He emphasized the vital role the NUJ has had in upholding justice, defending press freedom, and ensuring journalists’ safety even in challenging environments.

As the Union celebrates its 70th anniversary, Isiguzo expressed his optimism for the future under the leadership of Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdulahi. He believes that the Union will continue to build on the legacy of past leaders and confront new challenges while safeguarding the core values of press freedom, professionalism, and social responsibility.

Isiguzo also reaffirmed his support for the Union’s future endeavors, stating his commitment to contributing to its continued success. He expressed confidence that the next 70 years would bring even greater accomplishments, further solidifying the NUJ’s position as a leading institution in the media sector.

The former NUJ Leader extended his warm congratulations to all members of the NUJ for their collective achievement in reaching this historic milestone. He expressed hope that the Union’s legacy would not only be preserved but enhanced for future generations.
