In a heartbreaking and tragic turn of events, the family of Owoicho Ernest Ochoechi is calling for justice following his brutal killing by personnel of the Nigerian military.

On Saturday, April 5th, 2025, Ochoechi, a father, medical professional, and pillar of his community, was mercilessly beaten to death by soldiers in Apa Local Government Area, Benue State.

His family describes him as a peaceful man who had dedicated his life to serving others, and they are now left to mourn the loss of a man who was not only a loving father to two young sons but also a symbol of hope in their community.

In a public statement issued on April 9th, 2025, the Ochoechi family condemned the killing as a “deliberate act of violence” and called for an immediate, independent investigation into the circumstances of Ernest’s death.

They demanded that those responsible be identified and prosecuted, regardless of their position or rank within the military.

The family expressed their grief and anger over the brutal nature of the killing, describing it as a crime and a stain on the conscience of the nation. “Nobody deserves to die this way. Not Ernest. Not anyone,” the statement read. They vowed not to rest until justice is served and pledged to continue advocating for a transparent investigation into the tragic incident.

“Ernest was not a threat. He was a man of peace, a beacon of hope, and a pillar of our community. He dedicated his life to justice, development, and the service of others. He was also a professional medical personnel, a trained caregiver who saved lives and brought healing to many. On that fateful day, he was not armed, not violent, not fleeing. And yet, he was brutally beaten to death, mercilessly assaulted by those entrusted with the duty to protect. “

“This was not an accident. This was a deliberate act of violence that is both barbaric and inhumane. The brutal manner in which Ernest was murdered reflects the growing disregard for human life and dignity that has taken root in parts of our security institutions.”

“Our family is shattered. Ernest was a father to two young sons, who will now grow up without their father’s love, guidance, and presence. He was a cornerstone of our home and our community. His death has left a wound that words cannot heal.

Yet, in our pain, we are resolved. We will not be silent. We will not be intimidated. We will not rest until justice is done.”

“To all who have stood with us, our friends, neighbors, community members, and allies, we thank you. Your support gives us strength in this time of sorrow.
We humbly ask the public and the media to respect our privacy. Give us the space to grieve. Give us the dignity to mourn in peace.”

In closing, the Ochoechi family thanked their community and allies for their support during this painful time, but also requested privacy to mourn and grieve their loss. “Ernest’s life was not lived in vain,” they stated. “His values, compassion, and commitment to peace will live on through us.”
