The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, in partnership with Nizamiye Hospital, has organised a free medical outreach for journalists in the Federal Capital Territory as part of activities marking the 2026 Press Week.
The outreach, held in Abuja on Saturday, provided journalists with free medical consultations, health screenings, and professional health advice aimed at promoting the wellbeing of media practitioners who work under demanding and stressful conditions.
Speaking during the exercise, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Grace Ike, emphasised the importance of journalists prioritising their health while carrying out their professional duties.
According to her, journalists play a vital role in informing society and strengthening democracy, but often neglect their personal wellbeing in the course of service.
“A healthy journalist is better equipped to serve society with excellence,” she stated.
She commended Nizamiye Hospital for partnering with the union to support journalists through the initiative, noting that regular medical checks are essential for professionals working in high-pressure environments.
Representative of the hospital, Dr. Uzochukwu Chetachi, explained that the outreach was designed to give journalists access to free healthcare services and early medical evaluation.
She disclosed that specialists in cardiology, ophthalmology, general practice, pharmacy, laboratory services, and nursing participated in the exercise.
According to the medical team, journalists diagnosed with serious health conditions during the screening would be referred to appropriate specialists for further treatment and management.
The medical outreach coincided with the opening ceremony of the NUJ FCT Council’s 2026 Press Week themed: “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation.”
Addressing journalists during the opening ceremony, Comrade Grace Ike urged media practitioners across the country to uphold professionalism, ethical journalism, and factual reporting ahead of the 2027 general elections.
She warned that the increasing spread of fake news, misinformation, and propaganda poses a serious threat to democracy, national unity, and public trust.
“The press has a sacred duty to protect truth, defend accountability, and preserve the integrity of our democratic process,” she said.
Chairman of the 2026 Press Week, Mr. Obas Esiedesa, stated that the week-long activities would feature discussions and capacity-building sessions on media safety, journalism ethics, public interest reporting, and the role of the media in sustaining democracy.
He appreciated partners, stakeholders, and members of the planning committee for their support toward the successful commencement of the programme.
The NUJ FCT Council reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, professional development, and safety of journalists in the Federal Capital Territory and across Nigeria.
