The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has responded to recent online reports alleging an ‘illegal’ extension of the Central Working Committee (CWC) by six weeks. In a media release, the NUJ addressed the allegations, setting the record straight and highlighting the democratic processes within the organization.
The NUJ expressed concern over the misleading allegations and emphasized the importance of responsible free speech. The union refuted claims of an illegal tenure extension, stating that the decision was made collectively during a NEC meeting attended by 76 out of 101 members. The six-week extension was proposed to allow councils to settle financial obligations and ensure a fair process for the upcoming Triennial National Delegates’ Conference.
The NUJ also dismissed calls for the dissolution of the CWC and handing over of leadership to Council Secretaries and Chairmen as impractical and contradictory. The union emphasized its commitment to transparency, fairness, and adherence to its constitution, urging members and the public to disregard baseless allegations.
The NUJ further noted that, it remains focused on conducting the upcoming elections in a transparent and constitutional manner, reaffirming its dedication to upholding democratic processes within the organization.
