The House of Representatives has raised alarms over the proliferation of security checkpoints along the Onitsha-Enugu expressway and the extortion of commercial drivers on the route.
In a motion sponsored by Hon. Amobi Oga, the House called on Security Agencies to reduce the number of checkpoints and ensure that security operatives do not use their positions to harass or exploit citizens.
Lawmakers expressed concern that the excessive security checkpoints are counterproductive and undermine the economic stability of the region. They noted that the numerous checkpoints subject travelers to harassment, delays, and extortion, causing a ripple effect on economic activities and investments in the area.
Hon. Ogah emphasized the need for modern and efficient security strategies that do not violate the constitutional rights of citizens while maintaining security. The House mandated relevant committees to engage with Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, and the FRSC Corp Marshal to explore alternative security measures on the Onitsha-Enugu expressway.
Furthermore, the House called for community-based security initiatives and improved intelligence gathering to effectively address regional security concerns, rather than relying solely on excessive security checkpoints.
It was also emphasized that strict oversight be maintained to ensure that security operatives act within the bounds of the law and do not exploit or harass citizens.
