At a joint sitting of the Public Accounts Committees of the Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee, Rep. Bamidele Salam, inaugurated an Adhoc Committee of the National Association of Public Accounts Committees (NAPAC) with the aim of revitalizing and strengthening accountability and probity.
Rep. Salam emphasized the critical need for transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s governance, especially at a time when the spotlight is on these issues. He highlighted the importance of innovative approaches to address long-standing challenges of corruption, transparency, and accountability, and stressed the role of NAPAC in promoting good governance.
The Adhoc Committee will work towards reviving NAPAC and restoring its vibrancy, leveraging networks and collaborations with anti-corruption agencies, civil society organizations, and the media to promote transparency and accountability. Rep. Salam also pledged to engage with the offices of the Auditor General of the Federation and the Accountant General of the Federation to address delays in presenting reports on MDAs to the PAC.
The lawmaker expressed optimism about the Committee’s productivity and commitment to ensuring that all funds appropriated by the National Assembly are spent efficiently and lawfully. The initiative is expected to enhance accountability and encourage good governance across Nigeria.
