In a resounding victory for human rights advocates, the Senate has approved a groundbreaking bill aimed at revamping the current Violence Against Persons Prohibition Bill 2024. The new legislation, which passed its crucial Second Reading on the Senate floor, is designed to eradicate all forms of violence against individuals, provide robust protection and effective remedies for victims, and ensure that perpetrators face appropriate punishment.
Senator Isah Jibrin, the passionate sponsor of the bill, highlighted deficiencies in the existing legal framework that impede the achievement of its objectives, particularly citing inadequate provisions for compensating victims of violence. Following an intensive debate, the Senate referred the bill to the Committee on Human Rights and Legal Matters for comprehensive review, with a strict deadline of six weeks for a detailed report.
In a separate development during Tuesday’s plenary session, a new proposal seeking to establish the Chartered Out of Home Media Practitioners of Nigeria also made strides by advancing to its Second Reading. Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the visionary behind the bill, underscored its critical mission to set up a regulatory body overseeing digital displays nationwide and promoting professionalism in the industry. The bill was then forwarded to multiple Senate Committees for evaluation, with a directive to furnish a report within six weeks.
In another piece of noteworthy news from the Senate, Dr. Matthew Olumide received unanimous approval for his appointment as the Director-General of the esteemed National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA). Dr. Olumide’s confirmation reflects his exceptional qualifications and expertise in the sphere of space research and development, garnering commendation from Senators for his stellar credentials.
The Senate’s endorsement of the bill to combat violence against individuals, coupled with the confirmation of Dr. Olumide’s pivotal role at NASRDA, underlines a resolute commitment to protecting citizens’ well-being and advancing vital sectors of the nation’s landscape.
