In response to the recent tragic attack by alleged herdsmen in parts of Kogi state, the Nigerian Senate has announced plans to convene a national security summit. During Tuesday’s plenary session, senators unanimously agreed that urgent action is needed to address the country’s escalating security challenges.
The summit, which will include key stakeholders such as heads of security agencies, governors, traditional rulers, socio-cultural groups, and civil society organizations, aims to provide a platform for in-depth discussions and collaborative efforts to combat insecurity across the nation.
Senator Isa Jibrin, who represents Kogi East, highlighted the devastating impact of the recent attack on innocent citizens in his constituency, emphasizing the urgent need for concrete solutions to prevent further loss of lives and properties.
Several senators expressed deep concern over the recurring incidents of violence, stressing the importance of taking decisive action to restore peace and security in the affected areas.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio underscored the importance of the upcoming summit, stating that it will address the security challenges in a comprehensive manner. As part of their resolutions, the Senate approved the formation of an adhoc committee comprised of senators from each geopolitical zone to tackle the issue collectively.
Before adjourning, the Senate paid tribute to the victims of the recent attacks by observing a minute of silence in their honor. The commitment to holding a national security summit reflects the Senate’s dedication to finding sustainable solutions to the pressing security issues facing the nation.
