In a shocking move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State, citing powers granted to him under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution. The declaration comes with significant implications, including the suspension of the state’s governor, deputy governor, and all state legislators for an initial period of six months.
Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok Ete Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, has been appointed as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State for six months. Notably, the state judiciary will not be affected by the declaration.
In accordance with constitutional provisions, President Tinubu has transmitted the gazetted proclamation to the National Assembly, which must approve the declaration through a resolution of both Houses within two days if they are in session, or within 10 days if they are not.
